The thought of banana and avocado makes me want to gag, but there is something about this combination that has made both my girls say ‘nom nom nom’.
Sometimes I try to get inspiration for new baby mash combinations and wonder who was the sick individual that came up with some of them (imagine having the job of seeing if chicken with some apple is yummy). I think the secret seems to be achieving the right combination of sweet versus savoury.
While starting off with single flavours is the way to go, it doesn’t seem to take long before you’re mixing things up a bit and searching for fresh takes on old favourites.
Sometimes it can be a bit hit and miss in my household. Something that I’m sure the girls will love ends up being placed from pillar to post in disgust. I found that by stockpiling pureed apple and adding to anything it seems to make it at least edible.
While some people might suggest it’s not ideal to encourage sweetening of food so early I think to myself that as long as they still eat savoury it should be OK.
My second trick is to make a very basic white sauce that increases the delicious factor ten fold.
A few things to remember when starting your prem on solids:
- Prem babies can have very sensitive gag reflexes, make sure you start off slow, blending food right down can make it easier.
- Don’t rush, there’s no race to get a baby onto three meals a day, and you need to go gently on a little tummy.
- Start one food at a time so you can monitor allergies. – Save things like strawberries and honey until well after the baby is one year old.
If you have any winning mash combinations, please share.
